Fort Augustus Forest District Staff Outing

Malcolm Wield recalls ‘The magnificent tall ship was the Marguerite Explorer and the connection with Forestry Commission was the masts. The ship had arrived on the west coast in 2001 to run whale watching tours and the skipper Christopher ‘Swanny’ Swann dropped into the Fort Augustus office one day on the off chance of finding replacement masts. Naturally, we instantly obliged and supplied these in the photos from the P27 DF stand at Portclair (Inchnacardoch). I still have the thank you letter Swanny sent afterwards along with a wee book.
Unfortunately the commercial reality of running the enterprise proved too much for the owner and it was sold shortly after this. Last I heard, the ship sank whilst in harbour. I don’t know if it was ever salvaged’.
