Elchies Forest — Map 1 Scootmore

Date Added: 24 September 2015 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1969 Picture No: 3039

Maps are courtesy of Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District.

Following a complete resurvey circa 1967 this map shows part of the Elchies Forest known as Scootmore. This area started as a Scootmore Forest in its own right circa 1929 but at some point was incorporated into Elchies Forest (Scootmore also included another area to the south east known as Morinsh which was incorporated into Glenlivet Forest).

The compartments numbers now run from 151-181 and the planting years from 1929 (P29) to 1939 with some in 1969. The latter year refers to hand written notes showing areas which have been felled and replanted or underplanted. The main species is Scots pine but there are significant areas of larch and Sitka spruce especially in the southern portion.

This map may have been an early version of the resurvey as it is dated 1967 and was the District Officer, M Macpherson’s copy.

Any details about the forest or your work in the forest are very welcome.
