Elchies Forest - Archiestown

This hand drawn and coloured map is a prime example of a forester’s working copy of a forest planting map with compartments being surveyed and added along with, in time, the planting years and species detail. Foresters or District officers at this time will have had to use Compass or Artillery Directors for calculating the angles and directions of the internal boundaries and relied on the Gunter’s chain for length measurements. The booked measurements would all have been plotted in the Forest Office with the aid of scale rules and protractors.
The planting in this forest appears to have started around 1955 and this map was used up until 1960 with the Compartments running from No 1 to 93 in an irregular fashion. Nearer to Archiestown, Scots pine and larch is used in larger proportions but as the planting extended north and west this changed more to Lodgepole pine reflecting the incidence of more or deeper peat.
