Bin Forest Map 1925 — 1963

This is a good example of the original hand drawn and coloured planting maps produced up until the early 1960s. See the large image for full view.
The outline maps were copied by hand in Forestry Commission drawing offices from Ordnance Survey maps and as the compartments were surveyed and planted the details were added to the map by local field and office staff using steel nib pens and coloured inks as well as small paint brushes. The green lines represent the boundaries of the planting for each year and the red the compartment boundaries and sequence number. The letters RP signify a replant following devastating forest fire in this case around 1943.
In addition to the Bin Wood, Dunbennan, Garrowmuir, Brownhill, Whitehill, Cumrie, Auchmill, Longmuir and Kinnoir Woods are also detailed.
Note the 8 Forest Worker Holdings at Roadburn and at Inchtammack plus land sold to DOAS (Dept of Agric Scotland) in 1950. The brown lines, solid and dotted, appear to represent most of the forest roads that were constructed in 1949-53 as part of the work scheme for returning service men and often referred to as ‘Burma Roads’.
