The photograph and details are courtesy of John Keenleyside, Forres.
Photograph taken in 1981 at a hotel in Fochabers when a party gathered to honour Forest Research Ganger Fred Legge M.B.E on his retirement.
The people in the picture are from Left:
1. Jock Davidson a long term Forest Research worker based at Teindland and Newton Research.
2. Mrs Ealand a Forest Research Worker at Newton for many years and did a lot of work for Genetics, now Tree Breeding.
3. Jimmy Farquhar the first Research Forester at Newton who became Chief Forester based at Tulliallan, Kincardine on the Forth and covered a wide area of Scotland from this base. At the time of this picture he was retired but did work for EFG on potential acquisition of land for planting.
4. Charles Blackwood left holding the picture. Head forester in charge of the Newton out station. Apart from his Silvicultural skills he was also an expert line drawing artist and created this side view picture of Fred Legge by taking a colour slide picture projecting it on to a screen and filling in the detail by pencil.
5. John Keenleyside the current Chief Forester at time of picture.
6. Fred Legge who was a very skilled nursery man and in handling a spade for Lining out purposes. He was quick and accurate with all his tasks and a skilled tree planter on the hill. On his last day at work he planted 1200 trees on ploughed ground at Speymouth Forest. These figures were harder to achieve in Research plots than on normal hill planting because one had to get the exact number of plants in a row and in a plot.
7. Mrs Legge who received a bunch of flowers in recognition of her support to Fred over many years.
