Looking onto the former Hydro ‘Managers’ bungalows.
L to R occupiers:
1. Bill and Janice Burlton’ bungalow (Forester)
2. Alistair ‘Boom’ and Mrs MacAulay’ bungalow (Road squad lorry driver, Bedford TK tipper)
3. Empty (had been occupied by Jack Riddell (Chief Forester) afore the new forester’s house was built over the bridge as you leave Cannich on the left hand side of the Struy road.
4. George ‘Geordie’ and Sheena Douglas’ bungalow (Ganger)
5. SYHA east wing of the FC bothy building, with the secondary kitchen on the end next to the men’s dormitory. Gas bottles for the cooking rings and a geyser.
The buildings that formed the Cannich hydro camp, taken over by the FC (it was rumoured) were originally intended for a BP oil camp out in Saudi Arabia, but the deal never came off. So buildings with cedar shingles on the outside, backed with tarred paper, fixed onto 2” battens, with plasterboard fixed on the inside were erected on a site where the temperature in winter dropped regularly towards -10°C!
