Very little information on this slide other than RR which is taken to mean Riddoch of Rothiemay and the location could well be their Mosstodloch Mill. This view shows short logs arriving onto the sawbench and being run through two parallel circular saws to cut off the two side slabs. Note the wheel adjuster with register holes on the rim by the operators left hand. Equipment manufacturer?

Confirmation of the location and name of sawmill operator would be very welcome.

This is Riddochs mill at Kinnoir during the early 1970's. The sawmill had a fire a few years later and was rebuilt using similar equipment. The machine shown here is of Norwegian manufacture called Jensen and Dahl and being a double slabber was a fast and efficient was of producing mining timber. There was a facility on the machine to reverse the feed chain, which brought the piece of timber back to the sawyer to turn and make a second cut.
James Jones bought Riddochs in 1989 and Kinnoir continued to operate successfully until its closure during 2011.
I believe the sawyer could be Jim Simpson Snr, although I only knew his son many years later.
Jones still own the Kinnoir site, but it is now leased to A W Jenkinson for biomass fuel preparation. Comment left on 26 March 2015 at 07:41 by Neil Snedden
