History courtesy of Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District details the trials and tribulations of trying to establish a forest before machine cultivation and without the use of fencing to protect against rabbits. One telling statement ‘Kirkhill is a forest of which we are not proud’ hints at the problems the early foresters had but it is quite a different story today when anyone looks over the current forest and observes the magnificent stands of trees.

Towards the end of the report in Appendix II there is a table of all the Directors, District Officers and Foresters from 1921 the latter includes the names: A H Hannay; J McConnell; J M Kennedy; T Allan; W McDonald; J A Lamb; G Gilbert and in hand written notes J Guild and R M Hyslop.
