Culbin Forest History - Scottish Field 1936
This document is courtesy of the Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District. This is an extract of an article written in the Scottish Field in Jan 1936 but mentions no author and also unfortunately the photographs referred to are not to hand. I have however used one image from the collection of George Dey courtesy of Aberdeen University Library archives which was taken around this time to show the sand dunes.
The article again covers early history of Culbin and its reputation as a wealthy estate with high grain yields; the sand storms and inundation; early tree plantings and then the felling of the woods around 1918 followed by the purchase of part of the Culbin area by the Forestry Commission. Planting initially began on the east side replanting the areas not long felled which conveniently had good firm vegetation cover. In the more difficult and formerly unplanted areas the use of marram grass and thatching is mentioned but interestingly not that marram grass was grown in the forest nurseries initially. Early photographs of Newton nursery shown elsewhere in this archive show extensive marram beds.
