The narrow tracked International TD 9 is pulling an Oliver logger with a substantial load of logs on the winch rope; so much so that the load has not been close hauled into the back plate as the wheels and wheel shafts could have been damaged. It looks as though the winch controls have been bolted on the running board above the track.

This outfit is working on a Forestry Commission site noted as Upper Deeside. Can anyone identify the location and the men?

Late addition from Alistair Cassie, Ballater: "Willie Kemp with the outside squad at Alltcailleach after the storm. He was the the gaffer of the outside squad. Notice that he is wearing collar and tie. He was a tough boss but he would not ask a worker to do a job that he could not do himself So the story goes".

This International TD9 came to Alltcailleach Forest above Birkhall House to clear up after the 1953 gale. The Oliver Logger in the photo is similar to the one in your photo, No.1936; perhaps the same machine. In 1942, the Canadian Forestry Corps were operating the wider gauge TD9's all over Deeside forests, but they were issued with the Hyster logging Arches, a much more efficient tool.
This photo is taken just off the B976, south Deeside road. Jim Connel was not too fond of the narrow gauge TD9's; they could fall over on sidelands. I think the driver shown could be F.C. foreman, Mr Kemp. the hilltop in the background is Craig of Loinmuie.

The registration number on this tractor is a Cumberland one.I have a sulky very similar in my yard here and it was manufactured by a company in Aberdeen. It still has the original name plate on it. Comment left on 18 February 2021 at 23:54 by William McRobert
