Drainage Machinery Demo Kershope Forest

A large number drainage machines were demonstrated at an event in Kershope Forest in May 1964. Much of the event appears to have taken place on a cleared windblow site with heavy brash but some sections of standing forest were used to show drainage along cleared and or felled rackways. A series of photographs of an Atlas 1200 self propelled wheeled excavator working for a time within the felled zone. It obviously had great difficulty in negotiating the peaty slopes and would easily have bogged in the softer felled areas. The operator was obviously keen to show off its self lifting capacity and demonstrated various poses with either side or end lifted up by the power of the bucket arm. This tended to show the vulnerability of the under body fittings and the final ignominy was the tow out by a long wide County tractor possibly on site for that purpose!
