REport No 46 - The Tub Sledge
Two files containing about 65 Head Quarters Mechanical Development Committee Reports from 1950 to 1958 were saved from destruction by Jim Christie former Forestry Commission HQ, Plant Engineer. Report No 46 explains the use of the sledges particularly in the border forests where there are areas of soft peat through which the thinned logs and trees have to be dragged. The sledges ease the load through the soft conditions and prevent the timber from getting so dirty and muddy and devaluating the value.
The tub sledge seems to have been designed locally in the shape of a metal drum cut in half longitudinally but proved to be no improvement on the traditional sledge with a longer flatter base.
