Report No 40 - Jo Bu Junior Power Saw
Two files containing about 65 Head Quarters Mechanical Development Committee Reports from 1950 to 1958 were saved from destruction by Jim Christie former Forestry Commission HQ, Plant Engineer. Report No 40 covers the Junior Jo Bu chainsaw which it seems is already being used in several Forestry Commission areas. There is an interesting comparison of felling outputs between the chain saw and a two man felling team whereby the former felled 30 trees per hour and the manual team at 16 trees per hour (trees 10 – 14 inches in butt diameter but ‘sinks’ had been cut in previously.
It is interesting to see the cover circulation note from the Deputy Director General specifying that the JoBu Junior was to become the standard one man saw for FC thinnings and that investigations were continuing into suitable saws for larger clearfell trees and hardwoods. Also note the directive to form teams of men for felling to support the one man with the chainsaw. (In later years two man teams were formed with one chainsaw between them. The feller cut down a number of trees and as his partner sned off the branches the feller went back and cut the stems up into products. Usually the two men as a break then stacked the products into winch size loads.) The note is initialled HBP and it is assumed this is Henry Beresford Peirse.
