Two files containing about 65 Head Quarters Mechanical Development Committee Reports from 1950 to 1958 were saved from destruction by Jim Christie former Forestry Commission HQ, Plant Engineer. Jim, from Crook of Devon, has kindly made the reports available for scanning and entry onto this website. Please open the PDF to see this full report.

Report No23 titled ‘The sequence of operations for loading with the Hiab Hoist’ details the actions required to load long poles or logs onto a lorry using the Hiab hoist. There was obviously some skill required in judging where to fix the lifting rope onto the log load in order to achieve the correct balance that the second man could handle easily.

Director (England?) was obviously quite taken with the report and in the hand notes has emphasised its findings be distributed down to the field level. Interesting to see the chain of command!
