Large Diameter Wheels on 4 Wheeled Trailers
Two files containing about 65 Head Quarters Mechanical Development Committee Reports from 1950 to 1958 were saved from destruction by Jim Christie former Forestry Commission HQ, Plant Engineer. Report No 21 describes an experimental trailer made for the FC by Whitlock Bros. Consisting of a platform and 4 tractor wheels. The main aim was to see what the different rolling resistances were between this and a two wheeled trailer under different load sizes. Unfortunately no mention was made of any observed variation in effects on the ground surface.
There are one or two cryptic comments hand written into the margins. This report appears to have been circulated from Director to some member of the Mechanical Development Committee.
