Felling larch trees—Allean or Strathyre Fore

Date Added: 20 July 2013 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1970 Picture No: 1892

Photograph taken by Don MacCaskill and image courtesy of Bridget MacCaskill, Strathyre. Don was based as Head Forester at Inverinan from about 1960 through to about 1968 before transferring initially to Allean Forest and then Strathyre Forest in1972.

This dramatic felling image is a follow on from Picture No1891 and shows a very large larch tree being felled among some young regenerating trees. The quality of the larch is superb and must be around 100 years old or more. The under storey is interesting and shows some young larch and birch but other species possibly Norway spruce, Douglas fir or Abies grandis? Very difficult to say from the distant image. Does anyone recognise this site and the feller?
