Fiat 100C Mounted Tine Plough

Fiat 100C Mounted Tine Plough

Date Added: 02 March 2013 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1981 Picture No: 1657

The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.

This photograph is thought to have been taken in Skye (distinctive mountains) and features Fiat 100C Tractor Reg No MGN606L and FC No 62307. This must have been one of the first Fiat 100C tractors bought by the FC as the author has just recognised the machine as one driven by Jimmy Paton in 1974 in the Strontian area. It is therefore quite an elderly machine getting on for 10 years old. This was quite a heavy tractor with longer and wider tracks than previously favoured Fiat 70s. Often used in rocky and stoney ground the track plates, chains and rollers took a severe pounding as the machines reversed up over lumps of stones and rocks twisting the plates in all angles especially when the plough was raised in the reversing mode.

Does anyone recognise the tractor driver or his large Alsatian dog!

I think the driver could be Bob?, who later went on to be the Smalley excavater operator. Torrachilty was his 'home' forest and he used to bide down in Muir of Ord near the Black Isle showground. Comment left on 14 March 2013 at 22:34 by Bill Rayner
I think Bill refers to Ian Balloch who was from Muir of Ord and had Torracilty as his home station. Comment left on 15 March 2013 at 20:16 by Frank Thom
I think the same as Bill. Bob and dog I transported him often. Ian did not have an alsatian. Comment left on 17 January 2014 at 22:24 by Martin Mackenzie Longman Low Loader Ex
That was me with my alsatian dog (Leaha). The fiat then had the plough changed as the twin ram plough had poor ground clearance. Ian Balloch lived in Beauly not Muir of Ord.

Aye Bob, thank you for your confirmation, albeit 10 years on from my initial posting. Time flies! I hope that you are in good fettle? Bill Comment left on 30 March 2023 at 10:41 by Bill Rayner
