Fire dam Waternish Skye
The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.
A newly constructed or dug out fire dam at Waternish, Skye. The aim during this era was to create a body of water deep enough to accommodate a helicopter bucket which would be around 2 metres and clear of any flying obstructions such as tall trees and power lines.
Can anyone confirm if that is Davie Robertson (Chief Forester Skye) at the end of the dam? See PDF for other images and of a near miss fire inside the young forest.
