Willie MacLennan - Horseman — Lael Forest

Date Added: 25 January 2013 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1978 Picture No: 1504

The photograph is courtesy of the family of George Dey. George took many forestry photographs in his forestry career and many are now shown on this web site. Check under ‘Groups’ and George Dey Collection.

Frank Thom remembers Willie MacLennan as he owned two horses and worked one himself and the other was hired out to Murdo MacKenzie. The horses were used at Lael until about 1980.

Unfortunately none of the harness used is shown in this image apart from the bridal, halter, collar and hems. The hems are not the best fit on the collar but from the short halter it would seem the horse probably guided itself down the drag routes once the halter was thrown over its neck and relied on voice instructions for stopping and moving right or left.

The PDF contains several other views of Willie and his horse. Any stories about horse dragging of timber would be very welcome.
