Ploughing a Fire Trace

The location of this photograph has not been recorded and it is assumed that the ploughing operation is designed to establish a fire break between the open hill and the relatively young plantation. It was sometimes the practice to burn the dry vegetation annually along a strip outside and next to the forest fence where there was significant danger from muir burning operations. The wide space between the initial three furrows and the further out fourth furrow would be an ideal area for such strip burning.
