Harvesting Team working in Kildrummie area

Date Added: 20 December 2012 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1942 Picture No: 1441

Photograph courtesy of Norman Merchant, Rhynie whose father John Merchant worked for Christie and Logie Timber Merchants and Saw Millers. The photograph is though to date from the 1940s.

The team are posing with the cross cut saw and Scotch axes may have been sub contracted by the Walker Brothers. Norman has been able to name the following:

A. John Merchant
B. Sandy Cowe
C. Charlie or George Walker
D. ?

The cross cut saw with its very wide gullets on either side of the raker teeth would seem to indicate an American made saw. The axes look to be 6 or 7 lb versions and in behind can be seen a large earthen ware jar which may have contained a lubricant to help ease the saw as it cut its way through the tree.

Any information on the other member of the squad, Christie and Logie and cross cut saw lubricants would be very welcome.

It might be diesel for lubricating the crosscut saw blade and the axe handles preventing sticky resin build up. Comment left on 17 February 2016 at 12:03 by Leslie Phillip
