This brings back memories as this is my dad (Sam Mackenzie) remember him taking this lorry home and also the 'Hiab'. He retired 5 years after this photo was taken. My dad stayed in Conon when he was a lad he then moved to Maryburgh when he got married. Added by Marjory Macdonald (Mackenzie)on 7th september 2014.

My father drove an ERF GARDENER ENGINE lorry with a hiab on the back. He took it home and parked it in the Brahen Woods where the houses are built at the start of Dunglass road. Ogilvies also had Commer and Leyland lorries as well.

I used to go with my father in the lorries to Corpach wood mill in the school holidays to drop the loads off. On returning home we would stop at Invergarry store and get a walnut whip and a bottle Hays cola lemonade, ahh those were the days. We went all around different places to get the wood for the pulp mill. great days.

My dad used to work for Ogilvie's many years ago, although I can't remember which year. He was there until they ceased trading in 1982 or 83.
I actually remember being in that very lorry, I'm sure AST512M was an artic unit. My dad had the Atkinson with the HIAB at the front of the bed, it's number was HAS544N.I was allowed to operate the HIAB when I was younger & also climbed on top of the load if the chain that was thrown over the load got stuck on the top. Health & safety would go daft now if they saw what went on.
I also remember some of the mechanics there, Donnie (Campbell?) & Brian (MacKay?) were two names I remember, & Bobby the dog. Comment left on 17 March 2018 at 17:27 by John Thomson

I remember Sam Mac Kenzie from Connon Bridge well. He worked for many years as a driver with the firm of James Armstrong and his son H.D Armstrong, latterly from their sawmill at Windhill, Muir of Ord. The business stopped trading in approx 1967 and the 14 acre yard and sawmill buildings were bought by the Ogilvies for around £6500 pounds. Sam went on to work for many years with the Oglivies. Today the old sawmill yard is a scrap yard. At one time 20 lorries drove wood to this mill on a daily basis Comment left on 13 May 2013 at 16:20 by Harry Armstrong
