Dunnet Forest — Coast protection

This photograph shows a patch of sand dune which had started blowing out and has recently been re - thatched with tops of pine trees. It also appears that a wall of branches and tree stems has been erected on the seaward edge of the dunes. It is not clear how this was achieved but in other locations branches and stems were stuck vertically into the sand in a line with the help of some fence wire and posts and the blown sand built up the inside edge creating a small dune. By adding more vertical branches and stems as the sand enveloped the woody wall, the dune was increased in size over time until it was large enough to protect the whole area behind.
