Sports day at Glentress Forester School 1948

Photographs and images courtesy of Joan Park who has submitted some of her father, Hamish Park’s photographs from his days at Glentress Forester Training School in 1946-48.

The image shows events and organisation of the Glentress School sports day thought to be in summer 1948 when the 1946 and 1947 intake students numbering about 60 would be participating (or at least some of them).

Joan and her mother Jean comment:

‘Slow bike race...nearest camera.... Gordon Forbes’

A good overview of the sports field and also of the huts and what appears to be a vegetable garden. Can anyone comment on the camp layout and which huts were used for canteen, instruction or sleeping quarters?

Comments about buildings Glentress. Top left is the air raid shelters(local names ) maybe real use was food stores? To rear just left corner of picture is the Conservancy file store and top left is a row of huts or dormitories for students. First large corrugated hut was local number num 1 Glentress with porch, next along was number 2 Glentress, not sure if at time of photo if these had been made into houses for workers. My father James Deacon (Jimmy)and wife moved in 1955 approx, to number 2 then to number 1 where I and my brother and sister stayed, into the 1970's. At top of photos was a large wooden building used I believe for sleeping dormitories, next along was number 3 Glentress a workers house my first memory was of William Brown (Billy) and wife his family 2 girls and a boy lived there till the 1960's? To the right of that was a large wooden hut like weatherboarding which was a workers house, this was Heb Davidson, his wife and 3 children who stayed until the 1960's?
