This same skidder was used in 1975(6) at the same place to remove some huge trees felled by Wladyslaw(?)Rura and sned by myself and Ian Fraser. They were used as part of a pole and tyre fender system to protect the Scrabster harbour wall. I was a middle year Newton Rigg student at the time, living in the Cannich bothy. Tony Hinde took photos at the time for an article in the Slasher.

This magnificent symetrical Caledonian pine tree reminds me that when Archimedes of Syracuse (c. 212-287 BC) was looking for a very large spar to build a fabulous 122 m cruise ship Syracusia for King Hieron II. In Archimedes time, the Greeks preferred pine wood for ship building. Folklore has it that the best available pine trees suitable for the masts of this great ship was in a distant land the Romans called Caledonia which had a great pine forest with tall, straight, flexible trunks valued for lightness and strength, and also its copious content of self-preserving rosin - that sweet smelling, sticky gum. In fact, on the south side of Glen Affric there is a hill within the Caledonian Pine Forest Reserve called Beinn nan Sparra – the hill of the spars. Not that there was any need for Romans to go so far inland for such spars. As a forest worker i had the great job measuring these trees as part of the revision of Affric's forest working plans.
