Date Added: 24 March 2011 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1936 Picture No: 899

Images courtesy of Alan Duncan, Nursery Manager, Newton Nursery from a small collection of around 20 6x4 inch glass negatives that are stored at the nursery office and date from 1936. The land for the nursery was purchased by the forestry Commission in 1931 and the nursery formed very shortly after.

Looking northwards from the eastern section of the nursery over long board transplant beds with a large heap of seed bed grit stored near to the shed on right hand side. Seed beds on far side of the shed.

The farm house and buildings, far side of which is now the nursery administration centre, appear as though they are still working as a farm with corn stacks in the yard and also cattle in the field outside. Was the full parcel of land only fully used as a nursery in later years?
