Newton Nursery 1936
Images courtesy of Alan Duncan, Nursery Manager, Newton Nursery from a small collection of around 20 6x4 inch glass negatives that are stored at the nursery office and date from 1936. The land for the nursery was purchased by the forestry Commission in 1931 and the nursery formed very shortly after.
View looking south westwards from the near the extreme northwest corner section of the nursery. The boundary fence is rabbit proof but strangely there is no hedge at this point whereas else where the hedges (Beech and Lawson cyprus?) are well established. Is it possible the land was owned but rented out until it was needed for an expanded nursery later?
The grass field from photograph point is where the horse team are ploughing. Again a well shaped mound of material to the left of the picture.
