Alan Duncan from Newton Nursery comments:
‘The photograph is David (Dyke) Murray (older person in the white jumper) and Donald Wright sowing seed in the nursery. This is an old seed spreader which was used to sow seed prior to the introduction of the now mechanised version known as a "Sisis Seed Sower". The newer Sisis Sower is attached to the rear of a tractor 3-point linkage and is power driven off the tractor PTO drive, where as the sower in your picture was drawn by hand.’

A piece of hessian can be seen below the spreader. Is this to test the spreading density before staring down the full length of the seed bed?
