Sandy Main is mixing ‘red lead’ with seed in Newton Nursery about 1980. The red lead served two purposes (1) it made the seed more visible to eye and it was easier to judge the hand sowing density on the seed beds. Critical as too light and weeds took over with not enough seedlings to meet demand; too heavy and the seedlings could be crowded and weak to be of any use (2) supposed to deter eating by birds, rodents and possibly some insects.
