Clearfell site at Fetteresso
Photograph courtesy of Duncan Menzies, Banchory.
Newly felled area in Fetteresso Forest with the timber products cut to length lying in strips up the forest floor. Note all the branches and brash is laid between the timber piles. The harvester travelled over this brash as will the forwarder when it comes to lift the timber logs and carry them to the road side for the lorries. The brash protects the vulnerable site and prevents wheels breaking through the wet surface and creating wet tracks that could run with dirty water from there into streams.
Often there was not enough brash to protect sites as well as wished particularly if there was any peat on site.
