Archaeology in Rannoch Forest

Duncan recalls:
‘Bill Aitken from Perth, a member of Scottish Soc. of Antiquaries, at the site of a 'bloomery' (site for smelting iron ore). These sites are dotted all over Rannoch, usually exposed by FC ploughing. In this case the site was discovered by Alison Cameron, young daughter of Donnie Cameron, FC keeper. The first indication is the presence of heaps of 'slag' the residue of the smelting process. They were sites where small kilns were created and the ore was smelted using locally produced charcoal - taking the ore to the trees - showing that the area was extensively wooded centuries ago.’
