Digging out buried tree at Culbin Forest. Willie Forsythe (Head Ranger) and Laigh of Moray Forester John Walmsley (ex isle of Man) checking on the depth of the roots of a pine tree which has been engulfed over many years by the sand blown in from the shoreline of Culbin.

Note how the compression of the sand has reduced the sideways growth of that part of stem below the sand in comparison with the diameter above the white band which was the surface before digging started.
