Glentress Forestry School, Class of 1947-49

Glentress Forestry School, Class of 1947-49

Date Added: 17 November 2010 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1949 Picture No: 696

Photograph is part of Bill Stoddart’s collection of images taken when he was a lecturer at several Forester Training Schools. The photographs were handed in by his daughter Lilian Allan at the Forestry Memories drop in day at Huntly on 11 June 2010.

It has been difficult to put name the students in this photograph but the indications are that this is almost certainly the Class of 1947-49 and cross references with some details of Tom Johnstone’s account in Henry Smith’s booklet.

(It is possible this photograph may have been taken in 1948 rather than the end of the course for the 1947-49 class in 1949. There is another photograph No 697 which shows the instructor staff in the same attire and same landscape background but with another group of students which have not been identified but could be the 1946-48 class)

Jimmy Wilson was an instructor at Benmore when I was there in the early 60's.I think Bob Hart was there then as well. Comment left on 05 August 2011 at 21:21 by Pat Mc Auley
No.27 is my Dad John/Jack Roe. After Glentress he worked for a year at Glen Hurich and lived with his wife and three small girls at newly built forestry commission houses at Polloch. He then worked as Head Forester for the Philipaugh Estate, near Selkirk. Comment left on 23 November 2020 at 17:20 by Catherine Hobson
