Large larch log on wagon pulled by pair of horses in village of Moniaive - pre 1907
The post card image is courtesy of Bob Munro, Huntly and he has identified the former bank building seen in the distance above the collars of the horses and the church, above the rear end of the log. These buildings are still to be found in the village of Moniaive.
The Post card reads: Section of Larch tree, one of the first planted in Scotland, grown on Craigdarroch estate.
Postcard was sent, 11 June 1907 and could have been taken a few or number of years earlier. The size of the larch log indicates it would be well over 100 years in age and likely planted before 1800.
One of the first planted in Scotland is a strong statement – Japanese Larch or Hybrid Larch? Does anyone have any ideas about the origin of this larch tree, the company handling the log and which saw mill it was heading for?
