Thinning operation in progress – manual felling with chainsaw

Date Added: 24 December 2025 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1980 Picture No: 6220

The image is courtesy of John Thomson, formerly Forest District Manager of Aberdeenshire and Moray Forest District. This black and white image was taken by a photographer from Westland of Inverurie, Photographic Artists, but there is no detail on the location or operations.

The forest chainsaw operator is working in a rack way felled to allow timber extraction by a wheeled machine or forwarder of some type. Note the round file and pulp hook in the logger’s belt. Unusually there is no sign of a length measuring tape or a measuring stick to judge pulp wood lengths.

The site is assumed to be in the general Huntly area or north Aberdeenshire around 1980. Any details on the site, the saw or operator would be very welcome.
