Planting Bräcke Machine cultivated site – Culbin Forest
The slides were originally held by the late Alan Green of Forest Research (Newton) but handed over to Lesley Hutcheson by his widow who passed them onto Forestry and Land Scotland and thereafter found their way to Forestry Memories. The slide was actually taken by Sandy Watson who was Forester on Forest Management and looked after the restocking operations at this time.
The man doing the planting and dressed up in the blue McBean weather protection suite is Dannie Younie a forest worker in Laigh of Moray and Newton Nursery where he was a tractor driver.
The slide does mention the Bräcke name which was a large cultivation machine with two large wheels to which three spade wings were welded. The wheels were braked and intermittently at target distances dragged the spade through the ground causing the screefing away of the surface vegetation and leaving a bare soil patch for planting into.
