This group photograph shows mainly people who had applied to join the Forestry Commission and go through the Forestry School system. In those days they were expected to work for two years to gain practical experience and then work as a ganger for a further year before qualifying for entry to the Forestry School.

John MacLeod was Head Forester at Sunart at one point but prior to this he had been in Police Service in Derbyshire before enlisting with RAF; David Robertson was Head Forester at Queens at one point; Bob Ross left to work as a gardener in Cumberland (apparently he had been a POW 1940/45);

The actual photograph had the surnames written on the back in fountain pen ink and so done quite some time ago. I think you are right and I do remember saying to Willie that I would not have recognised him (as in 2nd from left). I think it is more like Willie Cameron holding the stob mell. I will need to get back to him.

Latest information from Willie is that the names were listed from the Right Hand Side not the left as I assumed. First man from the left is therefor Calum MacAulay, then David Robertson, Bob Ross, Willie Cameron and finally John MacLeod. Sorry for confusion and thanks to Frank for spotting the problem. I believe david robertson was head forester at queens forest glenmore in 1960 when glenmore lodge became loch morlich youth hostel. In which case his predecessor was jackie fraser and after him came alastair morrison. I would be grateful if anyone can confirm/deny that.
