Rosarie Forest – Speymouth Forest – Speyside Forest District - Moray Forest District
The map was recovered from shed at Newton that acted as a storage area for Forest Research who used the maps to locate forest and tree experiments in the field.
The earliest planting on this part of Rosarie Forest (Located between Keith and Rothes) appears to be around 1943 (P43) and it is believed this forest unit may have formed during the war period circa 1942/43 and was headed by forester H Pennet in 1948. The forest stayed as an independent unit until it was amalgamated into the enlarged Speymouth Forest in 1971/72.
The earliest tree planting appears to have been around 1943 or 1944 in Rosarie Wood and on into 1947 and later in Fiddle Wood and Hillhead Wood. The main species used were Scots pine, Sitka spruce and some Norway spruce as well as lodgepole pine.
By 1965 forester R G Aitken was charge at Rosarie and R A (Bob) Allison at Speymouth assisted there by Doug Elliot and Brian Foggo.
