Teindland Forest – Laigh of Moray – Speyside Forest District - Moray Forest District
The map was recovered from shed at Newton that acted as a storage area for Forest Research who used the maps to locate forest and tree experiments in the field.
One of the very early Forestry Commission forests and first appears in 1923 as a forest unit managed by J (John?) McEwen. This map may have been compiled as the result of a team resurvey of the forest circa 1980 with updates to 1987. At this time the earliest plantings noted are around 1926 to 1930 in the northern part of the forest. South of the former Forest Worker Holdings much of the early Forestry Commission planting has been clearfelled and replanted in a series of years in the 1980s. The little sub-compartments in T10 and T11 annotated as (b) may well have been a series of heathland forest nursery plots created to take advantage of the weed free acidic heathland soils conditions.
The forest was also used extensively for many Forest Research experiments over a wide range of years. The forest remained as a management unit until it was incorporated into the much enlarged Speymouth Forest formed by adding Aultmore, Rosarie (part) and Teindland in 1971/72.
