Balloch Forest (Keith) map – Planting circa 1930- 1963
This hand drawn map showing the boundaries of the Forestry Commission land area in the Balloch Forest (Aberdeenshire) points to at least three or more different acquisitions periods but no details are to hand. The forest is divided between two counties – presently Aberdeenshire and Moray – and the line is shown by a dark chain line annotated ‘Piles of stones’.
The initial planting on the north east sector from around 1930 to around 1942 was added to in the 1950s on Little Balloch Hill and around Garrowood. The south eastern sector including Compartments 100 to 119 plus 198 has a planting history from 1947 to 1962 with a high proportion pine and larch and notably substantial areas of Sitka spruce and Scots pine in mixture. This reflects the poorer soil qualities on much of the hill.
