Clearing of non native conifers in Glenmore - south side of Loch Morlich - Mystery machine?
The images are courtesy of Brain Duff, Glenmore Forest, who was handed the photographs taken in 1992.
It seems that a very wide range of felling, extraction and conversion techniques were used on this site possibly at the request of Work Study Branch who would have carried out timings and output studies for wider publication. There would also have been some observations on which operation systems minimised damage to ground conditions and to the retained native Scots pine trees.
This heavy duty JCB excavator may be attached to or pulling the unusual trailer but that is not certain. The unusual looking head fixed to the JCB extending boom also has hydraulic feed pipes and may have a rotary feature. The image detail is poor but it does look as if there are circular wheels or a track that could pull tree stems through but not sure?
Can anyone identify and describe this mystery machine head and how it operates? Also what is the purpose of the trailer? Again the operators may have come from Loch Awe area.
