Clearing of non native conifers in Glenmore - south side of Loch Morlich
The images are courtesy of Brain Duff, Glenmore Forest, who was handed the photographs taken in 1992.
It was said that a variety of felling techniques were used on this extensive site before a shortwood system utilising timber harvesters became the norm. On this steeper part of the site the non native trees, Sitka spruce, have been manually directionally felled presumably ready for extraction to a processing site by Clambunk skidder. However the remaining standing trees are a bit of a puzzle and would point to a possible high lead cable crane system being considered. Any further information would be welcome.
The PDF attached (link below) shows part of the site where the non native conifers have all been removed with some remnant veteran native Scots are now out in the open , free of competition . Note the protection systems used to prevent damage to their stems from the dragging away of the felled timber. It looks like conveyor belting has been wrapped around the stems and lashed on by some means.
