Clearing of non native conifers in Glenmore - south side of Loch Morlich
The images are courtesy of Brain Duff, Glenmore Forest, who was handed the photographs taken in 1992.
The modest sizes conifers, mainly Sitka spruce, have been felled in the length and roughly chainsaw sned for at least part of their length. The stems are being gathered and picked up by a Lokomo 910 Clambunk skidder and taken to a processing site. It was said that a variety of felling techniques were used on this extensive site before a shortwood system utilising timber harvesters became the norm. The clambunk operator looks like Gerald Macdonald who was a forwarder operator in Inverness Forest District for many years. Note the Scots pine (native Scots pine) left standing in the back ground which is presumed to be the purpose of the exercise.
The second image in the attached PDF (link below) shows a clipboard is just visible in the hands of an observer and may be a member of the Forestry Commission Work Study branch timing and recording outputs and work standards. He is observing a different operator on a second clambunk skidder in this photograph. The operator has not been identified.
Any further information on the operation and the operator would be very welcome.
