Lorne Forest District Map – Former Barcaldine and Crearan Forest Forest Areas updated to 1991 – Map 5
The map was recovered from a shed at Newton Nursery which acted as a storage area for Forest Research who used the maps to locate forest and tree experiments in the field.
The original survey date is not noted but possibly carried out around 1980. The map has been updated to 1991. This map depicts the upper higher elevation portion of Crearan Forest running alongside the River Crearan and on either side of the mountain named as Meall an Aodainn.
The original plantings here were largely carried out in the mid to late 1960s and the area south of the River Crearan in the late1970s. Sitka spruce again features strongly but also there are additions of larch, alder, Noble fir and lodgepole pine.
Crearan Forest was initiated in 1955 and forester W C Martin is noted as being in charge in 1960 and 1965. In 1972 it was amalgamated with Barcaldine Forest (hence the compartment numbering sequence in the 1000s) and Crearan name as a forest unit was lost.
Keith Miller writes “ - at Glen Creran I know there was an old sawmill and works depot there, which I can identify still but I don't recall ever seeing any residential buildings or offices in the glen”.
