Sequoia species at Guisachan Forest 1964

Date Added: 30 September 2024 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1964 Picture No: 5959

The photograph was taken by the late Finlay MacRae who was a District Officer in the Forestry Commission based in Dingwall at this time. The images are courtesy of his daughter Donna.

A very striking image of three Sequoia trees located somewhere on Guisachan Forest but almost certainly planted back in time when this was part of Guisachan Estate owned by Lord Tweedmouth. The species is uncertain also but the twigs are like those of Sequoia sepervirens, the coastal redwood from California. Note that some new planting of possibly Norway spruce has taken place in front of the trees and would provide some shelter in later years. The electricity pole and the fence might point to a road close to the trees.

Any details and corrections would be very welcome.
