National Committee for Scotland visiting Glen Affric 1976 (Forestry Commission advisory body)

Date Added: 27 September 2024 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1976 Picture No: 5956

The photograph was taken by the late Finlay MacRae who was a District Officer in the Forestry Commission based in Dingwall at this time. The images are courtesy of his daughter Donna.

Here the members of the National Committee for Scotland which met twice per year and advised the Forestry Commission on issues that affected the forest policy in Scotland are visiting Glen Affric and Affric Forest.
The members are recorded for 1976 as: Capt. D. S. Bowser (Chairman), Lt.-Col. A. E. Cameron, Mr A. M. Donnet, Mr D. A. Mithen, Mr William Wolfe, Capt. J. M. A. Yerburgh. Secretary to the Committee: Mr J. G. Armstrong. The Committee met in May and November 1975 and January 1976.
The members recorded for 1977 are the same except the secretary to the committee is named as Mr W.B. Cann instead of Mr J. G. Armstrong.
The Committee met in May and November 1976.

Graham Hamilton (Black Isle) former Regional Director North Scotland recalls some of the faces and has named the following -
Back row from left:
Bob Innes - Conservator North Scotland Conservancy
Tom Macbeath-Admin and Finance Officer North Scotland Conservancy John Armstrong- Senior Executive Office in HQ - perhaps in Secretariat
Dick Youngson - Red Deer Commission Field Officer

Middle row, from left:
Probably Arthur (Chris) Christie-Assistant Conservator
Roger Larsen – Assistant Conservator (with hat)
Dallas Mithen- Director Forest Management HQ.

Front row from left:
Billy Wolfe, the SNP politician owner of Chieftain Forge
Finlay MacRae – District Officer Dingwall Area
Probably Lt. Col. Cameron who was Chairman of the North Scotland Advisory Committee
Last man on right? (Possibly Bowser, Donnet or Yerburgh)

Any confirmations and further names would be very welcome.

Please see the PDF link below to view another photograph of the group minus Finlay MacRae. The presence of the Red Deer Commission field officer Dick Youngson leads to the probability that red deer was a topic covered on this meeting as probably the progress of regeneration of the native pine in Glen Affric.
