Windblown area at Clunes Forest - 1960

Date Added: 14 September 2024 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1960 Picture No: 5945

The photograph was taken by the late Finlay MacRae who was a District Officer in the Forestry Commission based in Lochaber at the time. The images are courtesy of his daughter Donna.

This image shows two men (foresters?) standing in the middle of a partially cleared windblown patch. It is difficult to assess what is actually happening in the back ground as two poles have been partially peeled and set upright. Slightly above the poles and perhaps a bit further away there is a tight cable running parallel with the ground the lower end of which is not visible as it merges with the trees and lying brash. Any suggestions as to the purpose of the set up poles and cable?

The two men are not named but the forester s at this time based at Clunes was Donnie Laird followed by J D Grant – the change taking place about 1960.
