Peat covered land near the Crask In Sutherland
The photograph was taken by the late Finlay MacRae who was a District Officer in the Forestry Commission based in Dingwall at the time. The images are courtesy of his daughter Donna.
A general view of the peat covered hills and valley hollows in the Crask area not far off the main road from Lairg north to Altnahara. If one looks closely straight lines can be seen here and there indicating the signs of past peat cutting and the remains of the peat banks. Possibly one bank was still active at the time the photograph was taken. The near ground in front of camera appears as if the top layer of peat had been removed – probably many decades previously.
