FORESTRY COMMISSION, SOFTWOOD SAWLOGS – PRESENTATION FOR SALE
FORESTRY COMMISSION, SOFTWOOD SAWLOGS – PRESENTATION FOR SALE
A small pamphlet published by the Forestry Commission (FC) in 1980 and reprinted in 1983.
At the time great emphasis was put on the presentation of sawlog parcels for sale from the FC. This pamphlet was intended as guidance for foresters to standardise methodology and give uniformity to parcels of sawlogs brought to the market.
The measured loads of sawlogs, laid out, measured for volume, individually numbered and booked, along with all the associated forms, transport dockets, took up many hours of a harvesting forester’s time and that of office clerical staff. Now replaced by mobile phone apps and databases!
Whilst the principles still apply, the whole of softwood timber marketing has moved on exponentially in the 40 years since this pamphlet was published. Standing sales, machine harvesting, with sawlog specifications updated “on the fly” by the sawmill managers, directly to the harvester operator. Individual log scanning on entry into the sawmill break down line, to obtain the maximum value from each log.
