Cross cutting and stacking Scots pine next to Struie Road, Ardross Forest
The photograph was taken by the late Finlay MacRae who was a District Officer in the Forestry Commission based in Dingwall at the time. The images are courtesy of his daughter Donna.
Again no information on this image but the sweep of the Struie Road next to the forest is recognisable from this image. Two Forestry Commission workers are cross cutting Scots pine trees dragged in by a skidder from the large clearfell area above the public road. There does not appear to be a forest road next to this site and the logs are stacked in rough piles perhaps awaiting transport to a nearby forest roadside by a forwarder featured in follow up images.
The photograph perhaps shows the last days of the process of tree felling followed by whole tree extraction and then manual processing into logs - a method that followed on from horse extraction. The follow up images show a steep hill side where organised felling and processing of trees into logs on the actual felling site has taken place. The timber was then extracted by forwarders.
Can anyone name the forest workers?
